025: Unreached

Romans 15:19-21 “… by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else's foundation, but as it is written, 'Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.’"

After Jesus’ resurrection the gospel message spread, beginning in Jerusalem. By the time Paul wrote his letter to the Christians of the church in Rome, the gospel had spread to every major city between Jerusalem and Rome. But Paul knew there were many places where the gospel had not yet been preached. These places were a priority in Paul’s mind and he made it his ambition to take the good news to the people of those lands.

Today, communities that have not yet heard the gospel of Jesus Christ are known as “unreached”. Though most Japanese know the name Jesus and know of the Christian religion, the majority of Japanese have not yet heard the gospel—that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on the cross for sins, rose from the grave, and forgiveness and salvation is available through faith in his name. This makes the Japanese one of the largest unreached communities in the world.

Why is Japan less than 1% Christian? Have 99% of Japanese heard the gospel and rejected it? No, the the majority has not yet heard the gospel. The only thing standing in-between some Japanese and faith is the need to hear. Romans 10:13-14 "For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?”

Recognize the opportunity you have been given to live in one of the most important ministry locations in the world. Like Paul, make it your ambition to share Christ with those who have never been told.
