Small Group Lesson:

The Bible shares with us the deep sadness experienced by several Biblical figures including Elijah, David, Job, Jeremiah, Jesus and Paul.

Are you surprised that men like this also experienced sorrow?

Because God understands our struggles he loves, comforts, and even uses depressed people.

Potential causes for depression include:

1. Longing for something that will not fulfil us. Only God can truly satisfy our souls yet we sinfully try to find satisfaction through other things.

Read John 4:13-14 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

What are you tempted to long for?

2. Fear. Fear of what is to come, especially irrational fears, can lead to depression.

Read Mark 4:36-40 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

What are your fears?

3. Forgetting truth and believing lies.

John 8:31-32, 44 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” … [The devil] was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

What lies do you hear (either internally or from external influences)?

What has God done for you and how has he provided for you? Let’s recall God’s provision together.

It is important to preach God’s truth to ourselves everyday. How can you do this? What truths do you need to tell yourself right now?
