Small Group Lesson:
Read John 15:4-5, 10 "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. ... If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love."

We abide in Jesus by obeying his commands. Jesus gave us many commands, here are a few:
  1. Love God (Matthew 22:37)
  2. Love your neighbor as your self (Matthew 22:39)
  3. Go and make disciples (Matthew 28:19)
  4. Forgive others (Matthew 6:14)
  5. Do not be anxious about food or clothes (Matthew 6:25)
  6. Do not store up earthly treasures (Matthew 6:19)
  7. Do not lust (Matthew 5:28)
  8. Do not insult another (Matthew 5:22)
  9. Die to yourself and follow Jesus (Luke 9:23)
  10. Humble yourself (Luke 18:14)
Disobedience to which of these commandments is hindering you from abiding in Jesus?
What and how do you need to obey?

Read John 15:11 "These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full."

Not abiding in Jesus by disobeying his commandments hinders our joy. Often, we choose sin over obedience to Jesus because we think sinning will bring us joy. But where sin always disappoints, abiding in Jesus always brings joy.

Do you have joy?

Read John 14:13-14 & John 15:8, 16 "Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. ... By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. ... You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you."

Why will God answer our prayers? How do you need to change your prayer life to fit with the motivation and purpose of prayer in these passages?
